Music Appreciation Assignment for Today...

While I am a pianist I find myself spending more and more time listening to love duets and arias from the world of Opera. Nothing, in my opinion, can compare with the sheer beauty of sound generated by the human voice, especially the colortura/lyrical sopranos of today and years past.

So, for today, an easy assignment... a couple of gems from Franz Lehar's Operetta/Comedy "Der Zarewitsch" Lets go to the youtube* clip:

Wieslaw Ochmann and Teresa Stratas sing a love duet that is quite beautiful. Any thoughts?

Listen several times and let me know what you think. The sheer beauty of sound she makes with her angelic voice is really something.

Just a word about the Operettas from Franz Lehar. Unlike many, if not most operas, Lehar brought humor and comedy to his without compromising the music. In fact, I think only Puccini can match Lehar in sheer beauty and quality of music.
