Yes, the melodies are important but music, for me, is all about sound- especially beautiful sound. Next to the human voice, piano (especially accompanied with full orchestra) offers a vast array of gorgeous sounds that can carry you into a very beautiful world. Its hard to imagine God, Himself, is not at work here!
I have only recently discovered the glory of sounds created by Camile Saint-Saens, a 20 century virtuoso composer and good friend of the greatest pianist ever, Franz Liszt. But, certainly Liszt, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev have their moments that are unequaled anywhere.
Take for example the breathtaking ocean sunsets at Santa Cruz. There are passages within the Saint-Saens Piano Concertos that are perfectly matched, acoustically, to the spectacular visual beauty of such a sight as these! The opening of his Piano Concerto in Eb Major offers a perfect example of what I mean. Here is the first couple of minutes, let me know what you think.
